Mars Combust (in Virgo) ~ Time to channel your ego energy
Mars, planet of drive and competition, is in the state of combustion from September 25th 2023, all the way until January 18th 2024, going from the signs of Virgo to Sagittarius.
A planet is combust when it’s in close proximity to the Sun and gets burnt up in its bright glare. In this case, Mars becomes invisible in the sky and symbolically weakened, where its power and influence are limited.
This does not mean its fierce energy disappears, but Mars is harder to control and may express itself in a reckless or even self-defeating way. You feel angry and overly competitive, and often frustrated that progress is too slow.
You may demand instant results, but it’s your challenge to find a balance, especially from October 4th to November 17th. Perhaps your efforts are being overshadowed or somebody is stealing your attention, and you have to either defer gratification or work in a subtler way.
Take care of your health when doing long hours, exercising, and collaborating with others, especially if someone else is in charge. Mars and the Sun are planetary friends, and Mars’s robust nature can deal with harsh conditions, but you have a constant sense of being driven.
This is also an egocentric combination, so it is not easy to work quietly and let others take the spotlight. Mars is strong in Scorpio from November 17th to December 27th, but also receives the influence of calculating Saturn, which demands all the more patience and composure.
From December 27th to January 18th, Mars exchanges signs with expansive Jupiter and your efforts get an injection of faith and optimism. A project with a humanitarian or spiritual focus is a big advantage at this point and you help yourself by joining in with a wider effort.

Mercury Combust (in Leo) ~ Get a firm hold of the facts
Mercury, planet of thought and speech, is ‘combust’ by the fiery Sun from September 30th until Nov 13th 2023.
This state arises when Mercury gets burnt up in the solar glare, and you lose some power to think clearly and communicate. Mercury combust becomes literally invisible in the sky, and symbolically may leave you with thoughts and opinions that ‘disappear’, or are left unheard.
This transit takes in three signs altogether, but spends most time in Virgo and then Libra. Mercury has natural strength in its own sign Virgo up to October 18th, with a smart, capable and practical mentality that understands the technical and everyday side of any problem.
You are well-informed, but also trust your real-world experience. Mercury’s combustion increases as it moves closer to the Sun in Virgo, and you may notice the most powerful effects of this transit as it progresses.
Despite your sharp and scholarly approach, a pressing issue or perhaps an overpowering personality dominates your thinking, which makes you slightly anxious and looking for a way to express yourself.
Mercury joins the Sun in Libra on October 18th, where until October 24th there is near-to-total combustion, and despite your best efforts, a big decision or written, academic or media work may be blocked or obscured.
